Grave SecretsI begin my journey through books with the purchase of two works in English. I got a horror book for children, useful for those who need to improve their language like me. This is Grave Secrets: Deadtime Stories by Annette and Gina Cascone, which I had already reported on the blog. Then I bought an adventure novel, set in the America of exploration: Eclipse: A Novel of Lewis and Clark by Richard S. Wheeler.
Characters that have always intrigued me. On Ebay I found a nice offer, 3 books for 1 euro each. I got all three. The first is Jane Special Data Austen's Sense and Sensibility , so I increase the number of women writers to read. I paired her with Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights , a title I've known for years, but which I've never approached. I concluded the "trilogy" with The Epic of Gilgames , yes in the book it is written exactly like that, without the final "h". Let's hope they didn't make any glaring errors in the translation.
Another good opportunity was a substantial volume of almost 700 pages, The Masterpieces of Knut Hamsun, which contains several novels by the Norwegian writer, a classic lived between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. To conclude, the economic burden that weighs on publishing, not only with regards to production costs, but also the latest state choices regarding distribution, promotion and marketing of titles, certainly does not contribute to a return to general quality: let's see more and more bookstores are closing in favor of large publishing groups, and this favors massification and genericity.
